University of California - a Panorama of Hills Against a California Sky
"The University of California plate design is interesting for many reasons. The border
presents a cyclorama of the Berkeley campus framing university buildings and vistas. The
unusual border treatment sets for the beauty of California architecture against a brilliant
sky and is relieved by typically local trees and hills. A secondary border of poppies
provides transition from the border to the center views.
Professor Eugene Neuhaus of the University art staff was consulted and generously
offered to assign the creation of a plate design as a problem in his advanced art class.
With this invaluable aid plus the suggestions of Michael Baltekal-Goodman '25, and the
photographic skill of Mrs. G. Elwood Hoofer, was created a type of ceramic design at once
strikingly distinctive and beautiful, and equally symbolic of the university environment."
From "Commemorative Plates by Wedgwood", a pamphlet published in 1931 by Jones, McDuffee &
Stratton, the major US china importer of the time, based in Boston.
